Pedestrian killed by train in southern Elk Grove

ELK GROVE, CA – Officers from the Elk Grove Police Department, the California Highway Patrol and Union Pacific Railroad are investigating a fatal collision Sunday between a Union Pacific freight train and a pedestrian in rural Elk Grove.

The collision happened on the Union Pacific Railroad tracks near Eschinger Road and Highway 99, south of Grant Line Road.

Police say a pedestrian was walking along the railroad tracks south of Grant Line Road when for an unknown reason the pedestrian jumped in front of the train.

The front of the northbound train came to a stop just north of the newly constructed Grant Line Road overpass.

Update: Sacramento County Coroner has identified the victim as 48-year-old Baj Sandhu.
