SACRAMENTO, CA – Early Sunday morning Sacramento Police responded to a hit and run vehicle collision involving a bicyclist.

At approximately 2:25 early Sunday morning, officers received information of an accident that occurred in the westbound lane of West El Camino Avenue on the I-5 overcrossing. The 61-year-old bicyclist was found unresponsive on the sidewalk on the north side of West El Camino Avenue and had a severely damaged bicycle next to him. Officers quickly arrived along with the Sacramento Fire Department who pronounced the man deceased at the scene.

The Sacramento Police Department’s Major Collision Investigation Unit responded to the scene to investigate. After patrol officers and detectives examined evidence, it appears that the cyclist and vehicle were traveling westbound on West El Camino Avenue. Detectives continue to search for anyone who may have witnessed the collision and are canvassing the area for video surveillance.

The Sacramento Police Department is requesting the community’s assistance in identifying the vehicle and driver that fled the scene. Update: Sacramento County Coroner has identified the victim as David Heredia, 61, of Sacramento.
