RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. — A man was arrested on suspicion of murder following a fatal altercation in a Rancho Cordova gas station parking lot late Sunday evening, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities responded to reports of a fight around 10:15 PM at the gas station located on the 2800 block of Zinfandel Drive. Upon arrival, law enforcement officers from the Rancho Cordova Police Department, along with deputies from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, found an unresponsive adult male on the ground.

"Officers immediately began to administer first aid until Fire Department personnel arrived on scene," the Sheriff’s Office stated. Despite efforts to save him, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A suspect, identified as 38-year-old Anthony Cervantes, was apprehended nearby shortly after. He matched the description provided by callers and was detained without incident. "Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the scene, began their investigation, interviewed witnesses, and gathered evidence," the release noted.

Following the investigation, detectives formally arrested Cervantes for murder. He was transported to the Sacramento County Main Jail, where he is being held without bail. Cervantes is scheduled to appear in court on April 17, 2024.

The identity of the deceased will be released by the Coroner’s Office pending notification of next of kin. Further details about the incident are still under investigation, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
