Sacramento, CA – A woman was found dead with a gunshot wound late Sunday evening in Sacramento following a welfare check that led to the discovery of shots fired, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

Police officers were called to the scene on the 6100 block of Ventura Street at approximately 7:57 PM on Sunday, March 3, 2024, to conduct a welfare check. Upon their arrival, officers reported hearing shots fired, prompting them to retreat and establish a perimeter around the area as they began a search for the suspect, who remains at large.

Officers discovered a female adult with at least one gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by responding fire personnel. The identity of the deceased will be released by the Coroner’s office once next of kin have been notified.

The Sacramento Police Department is now conducting an in-depth investigation into the incident, including the circumstances leading up to the shooting and whether officers were shot at. Authorities have yet to apprehend any suspects in connection with the shooting.
