DETAILS FROM THE SACRAMENTO COUNTY SHERIFF’s OFFICE

“On Tuesday morning February 15, 2022, a 37-year old male inmate experienced a medical emergency and died while in custody at the Sacramento County Main Jail. The subject had been in custody for approximately 31 hours, for felony vehicle hit and run resulting in death or serious/permanent injury {PC20001 (B)(2)} and was being held on $75,000 bail.

“Review of several hours of surveillance video leading up to the medial emergency show no indication of physical distress by the inmate or subsequent warning of impending emergency. The subject did not indicate a medical issue at the time of intake nor during the last two custody sessions. Deputies were alerted immediately to the subject’s distress and administered life saving measures until Correctional Health Staff and ultimately Sacramento City Fire arrived to take over and transport him to a local area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The suspect was housed with other inmates and showed no visible signs of trauma. No criminal or foul play is suspected.

“The Sheriff’s Office will complete a thorough inmate death investigation in accordance with department procedure and state laws. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine a cause of death and forward its findings as prescribed by law. The identity of the deceased victim will be made by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office after notification has been made to his next of kin.”
