Self-inflicted shooting causes late-night neighborhood lockdown

ELK GROVE – Police detectives have determined that suicide was to blame for a shooting death Friday night in Elk Grove.

Officers with the Elk Grove Police Department responded around 10:15 Friday night to the Montego Falls Apartments at 9950 Bruceville Road for a report of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found a 20-year-old male lying on the sidewalk who had suffered from a gunshot wound. Paramedics were called to the scene to render medical aid, however they determined the victim to be deceased.

Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators were called to the scene to begin an investigation into the victim’s death. Officers shut down both directions of Bruceville Road between Whitelock Parkway and Terrazzo Drive during the investigation.

After conducting their investigation, detectives determined the victim had been in an argument earlier in the evening with his girlfriend and family members. The victim shot at family members who were attempting to flee, and shortly thereafter turned the firearm onto himself and committed suicide.

Residents living in the apartment complex where the incident took place who had not been home at the time and arrived later were denied access until the scene was cleared for entry. At that point, residents had to park their vehicles at a nearby church and walk into the apartment complex.

Due to the circumstances regarding this incident, Public Safety News has decided not to post the identity of the victim.
