CITRUS HEIGHTS, CA – Officers are investigating a fatal vehicle versus pedestrian collision Sunday morning in Citrus Heights.

Around 5:13 Sunday morning, officers from the Citrus Heights Police Department responded to the intersection of Sunrise Blvd. and Old Auburn Blvd. for reports of a vehicle that collided with a pedestrian. Officers arrived and located a 28-year-old male lying down in the roadway. Lifesaving efforts were attempted by officers but the pedestrian was determined to be deceased upon impact by the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.

Update: Sacramento County Coroner has identified the victim as 28-year-old Joseph Downing of Citrus Heights

Police say the driver was traveling southbound in Sunrise Blvd when he collided with the pedestrian who was walking from the east side to the west side of Old Auburn Blvd. The 58-year-old male driver yielded immediately and was cooperating with the police on their investigation. Neither alcohol nor speed appear to be a factor.

Based on several witness statements and early findings, traffic investigators believe the pedestrian was crossing in the crosswalk during a “Don’t Walk” signal while the driver of the vehicle was traveling southbound on Sunrise Blvd. with a green light.

The Citrus Heights Police Department is asking any additional witnesses who may have seen the incident to contact their Traffic Unit at (916) 727-5500.
