RANCHO CORDOVA, CA – Police are investigating a vehicle accident that turned fatal in Rancho Cordova on Friday morning.

Around 10:45 Friday morning, Rancho Cordova Police were dispatched for a report of a vehicle accident at the intersection of White Rock Road and Luyung Drive. The collision took place when a passenger vehicle with two male occupants struck a power pole at the intersection. Preliminary investigation suggested that the driver of the car was traveling eastbound on White Rock Road when he lost control of the vehicle and ended up across the roadway onto the westbound side. He then struck a power pole just off of the roadway, leaving him trapped inside the vehicle and his male passenger injured, as well.

Firefighters from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District had to extricate the driver, a man in his mid-twenties, from the car. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died as a result of his injuries. The passenger of the vehicle, another male in his mid-twenties, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Update: Sacramento County Coroner identified the deceased driver as Jonathon Long, 20, of Rancho Cordova.

This accident is being investigated by the Rancho Cordova Police Department’s Traffic Unit. It is believed that speed may have been a factor, but additional information is being sought from persons who may have witnessed the incident.
