DETAILS FROM THE SACRAMENTO COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

“At 12:30 P.M. on Monday, July 10, 2023, the Sheriff’s Communications Center received a 15-round ShotSpotter activation alert near the 2400 block of Hurley Way in North Sacramento. The Communications Center subsequently received several calls reporting a group of juveniles shooting at each other. Deputies responded to the area and discovered at least 15 shell casings. Minutes later, deputies found a 16-year-old victim with a gunshot wound to the leg. Deputies rendered first aid, and Sacramento Metro Fire personnel transported the victim to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries as deputies continued their investigation.

“Witnesses reported the suspects had fled on foot into a nearby apartment complex. Deputies established a perimeter and conducted a search in conjunction with Sheriff K9 units. Sheriff K9 Tito located two outstanding suspects hiding inside a dumpster in the apartment complex’s parking lot.

“The K9 handler and Deputies de-escalated the armed barricaded subjects and ordered them out. The suspects surrendered without incident and were taken into custody. Deputies searched the dumpster and located a firearm inside. Both suspects were found to be juveniles and subsequently booked into Sacramento Juvenile Hall.

“Using a law enforcement K9 once again proved invaluable to the safety of the deputies, the community, and even the armed suspects. Not only did K9 Tito locate the violent suspects hiding and attempting to evade capture after having just been involved in a shooting, but the K9 and his handler helped bring about a peaceful ending.”
