POLICE: Sacramento Police Department K9 “Ranger” Stabbed During Apprehension of Suspect with Felony Warrant

THIS IS A DIRECT REPOST FROM THE SACRAMENTO POLICE DEPARTMENT MEDIA RELEASE

On November 5, 2021, just after 8:30 p.m., Sacramento Police Department Officers were attempting to contact a suspect at a residence in the 5300 block of 9th Avenue. The suspect had an active felony warrant for stalking and a threats charge. As officers were attempting to contact the suspect at his residence, the suspect fled out of the back door armed with a knife. An officer and his partner, K9 Ranger, both attempted to apprehend the suspect. During the apprehension, the suspect stabbed K9 Ranger in the abdomen and was then safely taken into custody.

K9 Ranger was transported to VCA Sacramento for treatment and underwent emergency surgery. Thankfully, K9 Ranger is expected to make a full recovery. The Sacramento Police Department would like to thank the veterinary staff for their hard work in helping K9 Ranger. SPD would also like to thank the outside law enforcement agencies that assisted our department.

The suspect, 58-year-old Hans Schroeder, was transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries sustained to his arm from K9 Ranger. Schroeder will be booked at the Sacramento County Main Jail for his active warrant and charges related to assaulting a police canine.
