Driver survives major collision with Sacramento lightrail commuter train in downtown Sacramento

Sacramento, CA | A man had to be extricated from his vehicle in Downtown Sacramento Thursday after colliding with a lightrail commuter train.

The intersection at 10th Street and O Street in Downtown Sacramento was a buzz as usual around lunchtime Thursday when a Sacramento Rapid Transit Lightrail train collided with two vehicles at the intersection.

A gray compact vehicle was only grazed on the driver’s side while a black BMW was t-boned by the train. The BMW was shoved across the intersection and became pinned between the train and a tree.

Firefighters conducted a lengthy extrication having to cut off doors, the roof of the vehicle and the steering wheel had to be moved. The driver was extricated and transported to the hospital.

Five victims in all were transported (3 from the train).

According to Battalion Chief  Williams, Truck 5 (who would have been the 1st in truck with rescue gear) was on brown-out. A truck from West Sac Fire had to be dispatched.
