SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. (PSN) — Sacramento County Sheriff's Office detectives are investigating a homicide after an inmate died during an altercation with his cellmate at the Sacramento County Main Jail, authorities said.
Deputies responded to a call from an inmate reporting a fight with his cellmate. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies found one inmate on the floor, unresponsive. "Deputies then pulled the downed inmate out of the cell and began CPR," according to a sheriff’s office media release.
Fire personnel arrived shortly afterward and pronounced the inmate deceased at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, pending notification of next-of-kin.
"Sheriff’s homicide detectives and crime scene detectives responded to the scene and have taken over the investigation," authorities said.
The inmate who alerted deputies was detained for questioning. Authorities noted that potential criminal charges may be forthcoming, stating, "The inmate who called deputies was detained and will be identified if criminal charges are applicable."
Further details regarding the circumstances of the death will be released as the investigation progresses.

Just a few short hours after the incident, Sergey Gutsu was formerly charged with the homicide of his cell mate.

In a secondary media release, Sergeant Amar Gandhi, Spokesperson for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office stated, “he is in custody at the Main Jail on a PC 2620, Order to Produce. GUTSU has been in custody in Sacramento County since 6/25/2024 and was picked up from Corcoran State Prison. He was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for a murder committed in Los Angeles County in 2015 in addition to being sentenced to 51 years to life for a robbery and attempted murder in Sonoma County in 2016.”

According to the Sacramento County Jail booking information, Gutsu was picked up at Corcoran on a warrant for two counts of homicide, two counts of robbery and carjacking.
