SACRAMENTO, Calif. (PSN) — A man has died following a shooting early this morning in downtown Sacramento. Officers from the Sacramento Police Department responded just before 1:00 a.m. to the 2400 block of J Street after receiving a report of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers located two adult males with gunshot wounds.

Both victims were transported to a local hospital. "Sadly, one of the individuals did succumb to their injuries at the hospital," said Officer Allison Smith of the Sacramento Police Department's Public Information Office in a statement to PSN. "The other person is in stable condition."

Due to the nature of the incident, homicide detectives and crime scene investigators have taken over the investigation. "Our homicide investigators as well as crime scene investigators responded to the scene. They'll be conducting their investigation, interviewing witnesses, canvassing the area," Officer Smith added.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office is responsible for notifying the next of kin before the identity of the deceased is released.

"We encourage anyone with any information to contact our dispatch line at (916) 808-5471," Officer Smith urged. "Our investigators are going to work through what led up to this incident."

The investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
