SACRAMENTO, CA (PSN)— An early morning assault in downtown Sacramento has left one man dead, prompting a full-scale homicide investigation by local authorities.
Just after 4 a.m., officers responded to reports of an assault near the 500 block of I Street. Upon arrival, they found a male adult suffering from significant injuries. Officers immediately began performing life-saving measures until they were relieved by fire department personnel. Unfortunately, the victim was later pronounced deceased.
A male adult person of interest was detained at the scene. According to the Sacramento Police Department, "When officers attempted to detain the individual, he did resist, resulting in minor injuries to the officer."
Given the serious nature of the incident, homicide detectives and crime scene investigators were called to the scene to take over the investigation. "They will be processing the scene, canvassing the area, and interviewing witnesses," the police department stated. "The circumstances of the incident remain under investigation."
The identity of the deceased will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office once the next of kin have been notified.
Authorities have indicated that the roads in the area will remain closed for several hours as detectives and crime scene investigators continue their work.
