UPDATE FROM THE SACRAMENTO POLICE DEPARTMENT

ORIGINAL POST

About 12:40 am Saturday, a minivan with a family was attacked by the Sideshow mob, social media video shows. We initially thought this was a vehicle accident related to the sideshow… not the case.

There was some significant "sideshow" activity occurring at the Meadowview and Amherst intersection in the south area of the city. Two law enforcement air units were overhead (SacPD helicopter [Air 1] and CHP fixed-wing [Air 21]), calling out participant plates and vehicle descriptions to officers waiting to catch up with participants away from the crowd to stop and cite the drivers and impound their vehicles.

An inquiry was submitted to the Sacramento Police Department just before 6 a.m. Saturday. Just after noon Monday, the Public Information Officer’s office sent out the media release below.

According to radio reports, the mob surrounded the mini-van and the terrified children from the van scattered to safety toward the adjacent apartment complex.

In social media video, you can see terrified children bolt from the van as the mob attacks. Good samaritan bystanders coral and console the kids.

The Sacramento Police Department issued the following statement Monday at 12:30 p.m.

“We are aware of a sideshow that occurred on 02/11/23 in the area or Amherst and Meadowview just after 12:15am. During that incident, a victim was assaulted and a report was taken. The report has been forwarded to our South Neighborhood Crimes Unit and detectives are actively investigating the case. We encourage any witnesses with information regarding this incident to contact the police department at 916-264-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-4357. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward up to $1,000. Anonymous tips can also be submitted using the “P3 Tips” smartphone app.

”There were two additional incidents related to the side show to answer your stat/cite/impound question.

  1. Officers conducted a traffic enforcement stop on a vehicle due to their actions at the sideshow. The driver was cited for traffic related violations and officers impounded the vehicle.
  2. Officers also conducted an enforcement stop on a vehicle leaving the area of the sideshow. During the investigation, officers located a firearm and narcotics. The suspect was arrested for firearm and narcotic related charges and their vehicle was also impounded.

“The Sacramento Police Department would like to remind the public that participation in a sideshow can result in vehicles being impounded on-scene or at a later time and can lead to fines and penalties as well as a suspended license.”
