DETAILS FROM THE SACRAMENTO COUNTY SHERIFF’s OFFICE

Just before 6:00 P.M. on Saturday, January 28, 2023, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a call regarding shots fired near a business on Arden Way. Moments later, the Sacramento Police Department was also notified of a shooting in the area. At approximately 6:04 P.M., an officer from the Sacramento Police Department was waved down by the victim at a nearby gas station. Deputies arrived on scene and learned the shooting actually took place at a smoke shop on Arden Way, approximately a half mile away.

The victim, an 18-year-old male, was transported to a local hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the crime scene, interviewed witnesses, and gathered evidence. Detectives were able to identify two suspects responsible for the shooting: a 17-year-old male juvenile and 20-year-old James FREEMAN.

On January 29, 2023, detectives located the two suspects at a motel on Alhambra Boulevard within the incorporated city of Sacramento. With the assistance of the Sacramento Police Department SWAT Team, the two suspects were taken into custody without incident. The juvenile suspect was taken to juvenile hall, while FREEMAN was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail for attempted murder (PC 664/187). He is currently ineligible for bail and is scheduled to appear in court on January 31, 2023, at 3:00 P.M.
