According to the Sacramento County Sheriff's office on Friday, July 15, 2022, at approximately 8:48 p.m., an officer from an outside agency attempted to conduct a traffic enforcement stop on a vehicle in the area of 65th Street and 14th Avenue. When the driver failed to yield, a vehicle pursuit ensued. Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office assisted in this pursuit.

In an attempt to evade officers, the driver drove recklessly into oncoming traffic and failed to stop at stop signs. The driver of the vehicle led officers through densely populated areas of the city and county of Sacramento driving at speeds in excess of 110 mph. During the pursuit, officers observed two occupants in the vehicle. Pursuing officers witnessed the suspects throwing several items from the vehicle; one of the items was a silver, metallic object. After the initial pursuit, the outside agency discontinued.

A short time later, a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputy observed this same vehicle on the Capital City Freeway near the Cal Expo exit driving erratically, weaving in and out of traffic at a high rate of speed. The deputy attempted to conduct a vehicle stop but the driver, again, failed to stop. The driver continued to drive recklessly reaching speeds of up to 115 mph. The driver exited onto Watt Avenue North before entering the freeway again at Interstate 80 heading westbound and ultimately exiting the freeway onto Norwood Avenue. The driver continued northbound on Norwood Avenue before losing control of the vehicle and colliding into a tree on Sully Street near Graff Rig Court in the City of Sacramento. The male juvenile driver of the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Sacramento Fire Department. The male juvenile passenger was transported to a local area hospital for treatment and expected to survive.

The collision is being investigated by the Sacramento Police Department’s Major Collision Investigations Unit as it occurred in their jurisdiction. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the whereabouts of the objects seen thrown from the suspect’s vehicle after an unknown motorcycle was seen leaving the area as officers arrived to retrieve them.

The identity of the victim, in this case, will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of next of kin. No further information is available at this time.
