On January 20, 2022, at 12:18 a.m. ShotSpotter alerted Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center to six different activations totaling 13 rounds fired within close proximity to each other in a field in south Sacramento County. Central Division Deputies were dispatched 45 seconds later. After deputies were dispatched, ShotSpotter detected additional rounds at a nearby location. No calls from residents in the area were ever received by the communications center regarding the gunfire.

As deputies approached the area, they located a suspect vehicle with four subjects attempting to flee the area. Deputies initiated a felony vehicle stop, detaining the driver and three passengers. A non-serialized firearm and ammunition were recovered from one of the juvenile occupants. Deputies were also able to retrieve spent ammunition casings from the original activation location. A 16-year-old juvenile male of Sacramento was arrested for multiple felonies and misdemeanors stemming from the ShotSpotter activation.

The juvenile male was transported to Sacramento County Juvenile Hall on two felony and two misdemeanor counts which include carrying loaded firearm registered to another, possession of a firearm by a minor, having a concealed firearm in a vehicle and discharge of a firearm in a grossly negligent manner. He is being held without bail.
