THIS IS A DIRECT REPOST FROM THE SACRAMENTO SHERIFF’s OFFICE MEDIA RELEASE

On Thursday, October 28, 2021, at approximately 10:43 p.m. along a foggy rural stretch of the 10,000 block of Franklin Boulevard in Sacramento County, a Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center (RCCC) Deputy with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office was driving a marked sheriff’s patrol vehicle when they struck a pedestrian standing in the road. The deputy was traveling northbound to the city center when the collision occurred. Two witnesses on scene stated the subject was standing in the middle of the road with their back to oncoming traffic. The deputy rendered medical aid to the victim until fire arrived and was transported to a local area hospital for treatment. The victim was in critical condition throughout the night then passed away from their injuries yesterday afternoon. No sheriff’s personnel or other community members were injured.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy, identify the victim, determine toxicology and notify next of kin.

The California Highway Patrol, which has jurisdiction on county roads, collected evidence and is investigating the crash. In addition, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a vehicle accident investigation as is policy for all collisions.
