“On April 10, 2021 at approximately 3:41 p.m., Sacramento Police Department patrol officers responded to the American River Bike Trail, near mile marker 3, after a caller reported seeing a female who appeared to be deceased. When officers arrived on scene, they located an adult female who had sustained visible injuries that were possibly from an assault. She was declared deceased on scene by Sacramento Fire Department personnel.

“Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators have responded to take over the investigation. Detectives will be conducting a canvass of the area for witnesses and evidence to help determine what occurred during this incident. This investigation is in the early stages and there is no suspect description to provide at this time.

“The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the victim after next of kin have been notified. Investigators believe the victim was unhoused and was staying in an encampment in the area.

“The Sacramento Police Department encourages any witnesses with information regarding this investigation to contact the dispatch center at (916) 808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP (4357).
