An investigation is underway after a tow truck operator was hit-and-killed by a vehicle on a Sacramento freeway overnight.

The crash happened around 11:40 PM on northbound Interstate 5 near Seamas Avenue.

According to a CHP official, the tow truck operator was in the process of hooking up a disabled vehicle on the right shoulder. It’s believed the operator was on the left side of the tow truck when he was struck by a passing vehicle. The tow truck operator sustained fatal injuries.

CHP says the driver stayed on scene. After an investigation, the driver was placed into custody on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. The driver was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital to be medically cleared.

All northbound lanes were closed while CHP conducted their investigation, and were reopened after the scene was cleared of debris and vehicles.

The driver of the vehicle the tow truck operator was hooking up was not injured, and is being treated as a witness.
