Just before noon Tuesday, Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews were dispatched to reports of a vegetation fire burning behind homes on 34th Street, between Q Street and Elkhorn Blvd in North Highlands.

With a visible column of smoke from a distance, crews arrived to find about an acre on fire to the rear of some homes. After crews were able to gain access to a long driveway that was adjacent to the burning acreage, they were able to get a quick wrap on the blaze and stop forward progress.

Homeowners were out with water hoses doing what they could to help keep the flames in check as best as possible prior to the fire department's arrival.

No homes were damaged, and no injuries were reported in the blaze. Crews were on the scene for nearly an hour and a half with extensive mop-up.
