At 4:20 Sunday evening, with area temps nearing triple digits, crews from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District were dispatched to reports of a vegetation fire in the area of 26th Street and I Street in Rio Linda.

When crews arrived, they found a small vegetation fire burning on McClellan Airport side of the fence of 26th Street; which is the western perimeter of the airfield.

With access issues, crews battled the blaze as it began to spread and slowly burn eastward toward the runway.

Metro's Copter 2 kept the blaze in check as crews worked around and gained access to the airfield from the north end of the airfield.

The fire was extinguished and mopped up a short time later.

No homes were damaged and no injuries reported. The cause is under investigation and we'll have additional details when/if they become available.
