SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Just after midnight early Saturday morning, firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire on the 100 block of Creekside Drive in South Sacramento.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire showing from one side of the duplex. Firefighters immediately began an aggressive fire attack. During the fire attack process, a patient emerged, being transported by paramedics to the UC Davis Medical Center for treatment.

The fire held to one side of the duplex, damaging the interior of the residence and the attic.

When firefighters searched the interior of the residence a second time, they found a deceased person. At this time, it is unknown how the person died, with the cause being under investigation. Family members were on scene, and community chaplains responded to help the family deal with the loss of their loved one. The name of the deceased will be released at a later time by the Sacramento County Coroner.

UPDATE: Sacramento Fire updated that a second person had died in the fire, and a firefighter was injured. It was unclear at the time of posting if the second fatality was the person transported.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway by the Sacramento Fire Department.
