NORTH HIGHLANDS – An investigation is ongoing into a deceased dog found in a burn pile Saturday morning in North Highlands.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District responded around 12:30 Friday afternoon for a smoke investigation on the 4700 block of Moorpark Way in North Highlands. When firefighters arrived, they found a burn pile in the backyard of a residence  with a deceased dog within the pile.

It is unclear at this point whether the dog was already deceased at the time of the fire or was alive. The carcass of the dog was retrieved by animal control officers. An animal autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

At this point, no arrests have been made by the Sheriff’s department. Animal control officers took a variety of other animals into protective custody pending the outcome of the active investigation.
