GALT, CA – Train service through Galt was halted Wednesday afternoon after a freight train derailed.

Union Pacific officials stated that around 3:30 Wednesday afternoon, a 75-car Union Pacific freight train was traveling northbound from Lathrop. South of Kost Road in Galt near the Sacramento/San Joaquin county line, the freight train derailed, causing some cars to be tipped over and others to be on their side. This occurred between two train bridges that cross some local creeks. The cars landed in a corn field that parallels the railroad tracks.

The freight train was carrying consumer goods including wine, rice, canned goods, and hardware, amongst other items. It was heading to Proviso, Illinois, and originated in Lathrop, California (San Joaquin County).

There have been no reports of personal injuries and no reports of hazmat situations. The cause of the derailment is under investigation.

Freight train service is expected to resume within the next couple of days.
