The Sacramento Police Department is investigating a fiery crash that claimed two lives early Saturday morning in the Campus Commons area of Sacramento.

When firefighters arrived on the scene of a solo vehicle accident on Howe Ave early Saturday morning, it was already too late for the occupants of the vehicle.

The incident occurred  in the median of Howe Ave between American River Drive and Swathmore Drive.

“Officers responded to a solo vehicle collision.  The car appeared to have been travelling southbound on Howe Avenue at a high rate of speed when it struck a tree in the center divider just south of American River Drive.

Both occupants were ejected and fatally injured,” Sacramento Police Officials said.

“The vehicle was engulfed in flames upon officers’ arrival.  Officers searched for any possible witnesses to the accident and the Major Collision Investigation Unit responded to assist.  Traffic had to be diverted around the area while detectives completed their investigation,”

Howe Avenue was reopened shortly after 6 a.m.
