A quiet, sleeping apartment complex in Natomas was awakened to gunfire early Wednesday morning in the 500 block of Bankside Way.

“At approximately 2:18 this morning, the Sacramento Police Department responded to reports of shots fired in an apartment complex at 500 Bankside Way,” said Lieutenant Dennis Joy, Sacramento Police Department.

“Officers arrived and found a male in his thirties, down with at least one gunshot wound that we can see,” said Joy. “The Sacramento Fire Department responded and declared the subject deceased. Right now it’s a crime scene and currently under investigation; doing a canvass and developing information from witnesses right now.”

Homicide detectives and CSI are presently on scene conducting the investigation, combing through the crime scene and the surrounding neighborhood for evidence and clues.

“We haven’t been able to identify the victim yet,” said Joy; “we don’t know his name or his history, background or anything. At this point we don’t know if there was some disagreement, fight or what went on, but most the witnesses are saying they just heard shots fired and nothing prior to that. No one saw the shooter but we are in the process of trying to find someone who may have.”

“I was sleep’en, but it was loud–like six rounds,” said Alex Cundiff who’s apartment was near the shooting scene; “two of them, a pause, then four more. I knew it wasn’t fireworks; it was just loud and distinct.”

The Sacramento Police Department urges anyone with information pertaining to this crime to contact the dispatch center at (916) 264-5471 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP (4357) or text in a tip to 274637 (CRIMES).
