SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A fatal multi-vehicle crash shut down a Downtown Sacramento intersection for nearly five hours Sunday evening into early Monday morning.

Just before 9:00 p.m. Sunday, Sacramento police officers and paramedics responded to the intersection of 12th Street and I Street in Downtown Sacramento. Callers reported multiple cars had crashed in the intersection.

When units arrived, they found two cars blocking the intersection with damage; a third vehicle was located on the corner of the intersection crashed into a light standard.

Paramedics tended to the occupants of the vehicles. One of the drivers was transported to the hospital and later died. The other occupants of the cars were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A Regional Transit light rail train was forced to wait throughout the investigation at the scene due to the intersection being blocked. The train did not appear to have played a part in the collision.

Sacramento Police Department’s Motors Unit and Major Collision Investigation Unit arrived to investigate the collision. The scene was cleared around 2:00 a.m. Monday.
