SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A suspect is in custody after shooting a Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy.

Just before 6:00 PM Tuesday, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Deputy Alex Ledwig, assigned to Regional Transit Police Services, radioed into dispatch that he was fighting with a subject on the lower platform of the Watt/I-80 light rail station. Deputy Ledwig then radioed in a short time later that he had been shot.

Other deputies along with officers from outside agencies immediately responded to the scene. The Sheriff’s helicopter was in the area and arrived on scene quickly, and found the suspect running into the nearby Red Roof Inn motel on Watt Avenue. A perimeter was immediately established around the motel. In the meantime, paramedics responded and transported Deputy Ledwig to Mercy San Juan hospital.

The Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail, otherwise known as SWAT, responded to the motel. Evacuations of nearby businesses and the motel began. SWAT officers began clearing the motel with the use of a camera attached to a remote-controlled robot. About three hours into the search, around 9:15 PM, the suspect was found hiding in an outside hallway of the motel. The suspect, later identified as Nicory Marquis Spain, 27, of Sacramento, surrendered peacefully to deputies. He was taken into custody by Sheriff’s detectives for questioning and then was later transported to the Sacramento Main Jail. Spain is currently charged with attempted murder on a peace officer. He is currently ineligible for bail. He will be arraigned on June 30th in Sacramento Superior Court.

Deputy Alex Ladwig is a four-year veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, currently assigned to Regional Transit Police Services. He is said to be in stable condition with major facial injuries.

Watt Avenue and surrounding streets including on/off ramps from Interstate 80 were closed while the incident took place.

Outside agencies assisting in the incident include Sacramento Police Department, Folsom Police Department, California Highway Patrol and Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.
